Who, me?
I’m Catherine. A visual artist with a penchant for things tactile and tedious. I have degrees in sustainable agriculture, physiology, and nutrition, and spent years donning hats in the restaurant industry. I’ve taken photos for cantankerous chefs, world-class bartenders, and small but mighty food brands. I throw killer dinner parties. I’m obsessed with a well-balanced dish, mentally organize flavor on a musical scale, and believe just about anything can be improved with a squeeze of lemon. I like plants, both as food and as decoration. I have a strict catch-and-release policy on spiders but love crushing details, and when Mister Rogers said “look for the helpers,” I secretly knew he was talking about me.
Small brands: you’ve found your helper—
“What’s with all the beans?!”
A couple years back, my dear friend Lesley co-founded her dream business - a bean brand that would ultimately change the way home cooks think about dried beans via freshly harvested and flavorful regional offerings. I’d side hustled in food photography while working in fine dining, and offered to do some photoshoots as they grew their business. Thousands of photos and countless pots of beans later, their vision and feedback has been instrumental in developing not only my food styling and photography skills, but also my understanding of the challenges facing small food brands in today’s fast-paced social media environment. In 2023, with my portfolio (and my belly) full of beans, I launched Counter Collaborative to cater to the needs of small-but-mighty food brands like Lesley’s whose dream and hustle I so admire.
